An example of digital interactive narrative?
I have spent an eternity on line and there are masses and masses of articles and opinions of interactive narrative. And precious few good examples. I imagine that as a game player, and familiar with that form of interactive media there must be any number of good examples. But my interest in game playing stopped with asteriods and space invaders (check this out to remind yourself). I have watched people playing the Sims, seeing it as only a digital dolly’s house.
However I did find this lecture by Tim Arnail very interesting. It defines interactivity in a way I can relate to
interact v.
act on each other. Derivative: interaction n.
narrative n.
ordered account of connected events. adj. of or by narration.
and it also provided a number of interesting examples. Plus a diagram of how the links where structured. The target of the lecture were execs at Channel 4 and the proposition is clearly that of a form of new broadcasting.
In the end I plumbed for 253 by Geoff Ryland. Not a very new site, little in the way of flash graphics, video or audio, but a simple and engaging multi layed story. I really like the way the characters are economically drawn and the way the plot builds from the investigations that you make.
I have built a little keynote presentation (I prefar writing in Powerpoint) then exported it as a ppt for the lecture. In keeping with the hypertextual methodology I have used hyperlinks to navigate the lecture in a non linear way.
I have earlier found another simplier one written by Rachel Molenaar.
